Sproat Art

Artistic Works By Katherine Sproat

Artist Statement

To Begin, the art work that I create is often spontaneous and inspired by personal and imaginative ideas. Many of my pieces are inspired by my imagination, my dreams, my life and the world around me. I prefer to work with acrylic paints as well as other various mediums, including photography. I like to work with faces and abstract ideas, mixing and matching ideas that connect on different levels provoking viewers to see further into the work and the larger idea behind it. I also use lots of lines and shapes in my work, as well as nature and animal themes too.

I have variety in my work as I go from painting to photographing to building and than back to painting. I am always thinking of new ideas, and I am always creating new pieces, and exploring my creativity further and further.

Education

1991–2006      Hillfield Strathallen College             Hamilton, ON

  • Focused strongly on art throughout my four years of Highschool
  • During application process to University I was accepted into the Art History Program at McMaster University and the Visual Arts Honours program at York University. However I chose to pursue dance instead because I want to explore movement and dance.

2006- 2010            York University                   Toronto, ON

  • B.A.  Degree In Fine Arts, Major Dance
  • Throughout different courses I have explored areas such as history, business, visual art, dance, and science. I have done various dance related projects that look at how art relates to dance and examines how artists connect with dance throughout history.
  • I have also created a dance piece where the dancer was dancing but painting a picture as she danced. I also created the background stage setup for the piece with  long, colourful, abstract painted banners that covered three walls of the studio space that the piece was shown in.
